Dr. Charles "Doc" Goodwin

Grand Marshal Doc Goodwin

Dr. Charles "Doc" Goodwin was nominated by Boy Scout Troop 236 at Christ United Methodist Church in Kettering. He is a Pediatric Surgeon at Children's Medical Center and President of Pediatrics Surgeons of Dayton. His love for children shows in his chosen profession and his volunteering in our community. He not only IS a leader, he helps devoted parent volunteers nurture future leaders. That's a sign of a truly great LEADER!

Currently he holds the title of Scoutmaster of Troop 236. A position he has held for 21 years. The troop has consistently had over 100 scouts on its roster. The ages range from 12 to 18 years or 6th grade to 12th grade. During this time he has been the Scoutmaster for 156 Eagle Scouts and continues to add more each year. Doc himself was a Cub Scout and advanced to Boy Scout then to Eagle Scout. His two sons have followed in his footsteps.

Doc has been working with Scouts for 40+ years including the time he spent as a Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Pack and Troop leader for his sons and continues today even though his own children are no longer in the program. The experiences he had as a boy and as a father encouraged him to continue to impact other kids the way he was affected. While he truly enjoys helping the already accomplished accomplish more, his Boy Scout Troop has always been a haven for those who needed help as well. Helping the emotionally immature boy develop into a mature sound leader has always been a focus of Doc's work in Scouting. He developed a four day Troup 236 Leadership and Scout Skills Camp and, with three Eagle Scouts, wrote a 189 page instructors manual for the camp.

As Scoutmaster of the Troop he has used his personal charm, wit and storytelling ability to provide leadership development and outdoor skills to thousands of Kettering youth. Doc has authored a book, "Scout Shorts" about his first 15 years as a scoutmaster. All profits from the book go into a campership fund for scouts. This fund allows boys who may not otherwise afford it to attend campouts to grow and hone their skills. Along with other parents he works diligently at the weekly meetings and summer camps to help the boys earn the merit badges required to advance ranks.

His devotion to the troop extends throughout the entire year. His evenings may consist of helping groups earn the swimming merit badge; attending weekly meetings; conducting parent planning meetings; and meeting with the Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders. He has led crews to Philmont four times, Tinnerman Canoe Base twice and Sea Base three times. He has led three crews on the Appalachian Trial. His international travels include the BSA World Jamboree in England and he has plans to attend the Head Scoutmaster in Sweden in 2011. Closer to home he will be attending the 2010 National Scout Jamboree in Virginia.

Dr. Goodwin is a Red Cross Instructor for CPR and First Aid. He is a BSA Lifeguard and a YMCA Aquatic Instructor. Among the many awards and recognitions he has received are the Kettering Mayor's Citizen Volunteer of the Year Award in 2006. Within the Boy Scouts he has been awarded the District Award of Merit, the Scoutmasters Award of Merit and the Wright Brothers' District Scoutmaster of the Year.

Kettering Holiday At Home Foundation is very pleased to honor Dr. Charles "Doc" Goodwin as the 2010 Grand Marshal.
