In keeping with its mission of promoting community service and volunteerism, Kettering at Holiday at Home sponsors a community service scholarship. One young man and one young woman–rising college freshmen through rising college seniors are eligible. Each will receive a $5000 scholarship in recognition of his or her commitment to community service. Applicants must live in Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Centerville, Kettering, Miamisburg, Moraine, Oakwood, or West Carrollton; or the townships of Beavercreek, Miami, Sugarcreek, or Washington. There is no fee to apply for the scholarships.

Additional Scholarship Opportunities

Runners-up will each receive a $250 scholarship award. The University of Dayton offers an additional $500 scholarship to a Holiday at Home Scholarship winner attending UD; the award will be split between a male and female if both attend UD. Additional scholarships from Wright State University and Sinclair Community College are pending.

The Application Process

The application process includes an application, the completion of a 250-500-word essay, two letters of recommendation, and a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale verified by either an official transcript or a letter from the school on school letterhead. Finalists, selected on the basis of their application materials, will be notified in early June and be interviewed by a separate panel of judges in mid-June at the Kettering Government Center.

The Essay Prompt

Community service is active. That’s why this year’s Holiday at Home three-verb theme, Serve, Protect, Defend, is particularly appropriate to our Community Service Scholarship. Consider your own community service and create a personal three-verb motto that reflects your motivations, ideas, values, and experiences with regard to that service. Explain why you’ve chosen those three verbs, being sure to offer specific examples and descriptions from your own service experiences. Be creative and authentic in your written response. Feel free to express yourself honestly. We recognize that some community service experiences are mountaintop moments while others leave you feeling less than positive. What we are looking for is a motto that truly reflects your experiences with service, not a generalized motto to encourage others to serve.
